Default Compression Release Valve for 96ci?

I just bought a 2009 Street Glide and looking at putting a cam in. I have had 2 different opinions about the need for compression release valves. Ones says yes and the other one says no.

Looking for some advice. Frist bike I've ever owned! Thanks

It depends on a few factors. Which cam will you be using? Are you planning on any headwork or thinking of bumping the compression ratio?
I would think that with just a mild cam and nothing else you don't need a CR.

Oh, and congrats on the new ride and welcome to the forum.

If CCP is greater than 190psi, install compression releases. You also have the option of a variety of EZ Start cams from S&S which would eliminate the need for CRs.......

EDIT: What JBJ says below is true; however compression releases are cheap and with CCP at 190psi, or higher, batteries and starters are much happier and less prone to become maintenance issues. JMHO.......

Thousands of cam swaps have done without adding compression releases, including mine. Easy peasy.

Any cam you choose will produce less ccp than the stock cams. So no need for it unless compression will be changed via head decking. A 96 motor only runs about 9.2 static.

a lot of extra work to take heads off just to fit releases if otherwise heads are staying on...
if heads are coming off I would fit releases now and be done with it.
your battery and starter will be happier with them fitted.

You know better. IIRC, 09 OEM cam intake close is 30*; CCP about 180psi. There are a variety of cams with earlier intake close events that will make near 190psi CCP. I can't think of a cam off the top of my head that would make 190CCP and he can surely get by without releases.

I agree with Tat2U, pulling heads for releases is OTT, particularly when there are plenty of EZ start cams available for a cam change.

True. Maybe an Andrews 21 and a few like that could be under 30* but more than likely if you're a betting man the cam choice will be over 30*.
Can I getta what what
