Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
California does not have any inspection requirements for motorcycles yet.. It interesting that they don't even have a general vehicle inspection.. I know Maryland and Hawaii require all motor vehicles to be inspected periodically.
Thank God...Would be just an inconvenience and cash outlay
You are just one of those guys that likes a project (and also a money pit!)- and you are getting close to being "done" on that bike.
I'm going to be the little devil on your shoulder whispering bad things in your ear: "Look at getting a Shovelhead to tear down and rebuild.....you know it makes sense...."
Believe me, I've thought about it... Wife would have none of it though! My challenge is that I am a man of multiple hobbies. I pick them up like no tomorrow. I've bought, refurbished, and (tried) to sell old arcade games for fun. I got a gliding license back in the 90's. Saltwater Reef Aquariums, you name it I've probably tried it Currently I've been getting our son into RC airplanes (ok more for me), RC trucks (ok more for me), and of course I'm also a cyclist with a penchant for high end road bikes. So alas, I don't see another motorcycle in my future. In fact, most of the "adjustments" I've made to the Harley have been done under cover of darkness!

Yeah maybe. I do plan to keep the Fueling's for now, they have been very solid in many other builds and were recommended by Kirby so we'll see!
Happy New Year to you as well Robby. Hope you are well and enjoying that magnificent riding area you live in. So many questions run through my head on this.....
Will you be making the "how to" thread like you did for your previous projects?
Are there tools specific to this job you need/ed to get?
Are you following the Fuel Moto videos as your main guide or other?
Do you need to get bigger underwear to contain the massive ***** you must have to do this?
As an aside, I know CA leads the country on EPA related and what not. How does it work in CA for inspection for your bike? In NJ some years ago, they did away with inspection for bikes. Same on your end?
Greatly anticipate watching this!!!!
Yup definitely plan to do another thread for the novice, although as you mention the FM videos are pretty damn good. Still, I'm sure there will be some insight as to my usual floundering in some areas.
For tools, Kirby supplied me with a little wrist pin clip gadget so the only extra tools I'm buying are perhaps a ring compressor for the pistons (still not sure, may do the popsicle stick method), and some dog bones or torque adjuster for some of the head bolts that caused me such grief last time around. Lastly I did purchase some new 10pt bolts for the Throttle manifold since the allen heads were such a challenge. I got those via Alloybolts as per DJL's recommendation
As mentioned by Bwoltz, no extra inspections thankfully! When we moved here I was frantically trying to find a stock exhaust just in case, but all they did was double check the VIN numbers and sent me on my way!
*****? Nah, just a sucker for punishment

Looking good Robby. So Kirby gapped the rings for you? I recall mine from S&S were not gapped already, had to do it myself.
Clean, clean, and clean some more everything you have there. Cylinders, pistons, rings, wrist pins, even your ring compressor tool. They're all filthy.
Thanks Matt!
Yep he gapped the rings for me thankfully. I'm sure correctly but I have no idea how I'd check.
Funny you mention the cleaning. I actually bookmarked your pages on this. Seems like I practically need a sterile area!

That's awesome - you sound just like me! My list includes (or included) paragliding, gliding, free fall skydiving, home brewing, fairly high end cooking, road and mountain cycling, model rocketry, scuba diving......oh - and motorcycling.
Every time I pick up a new hobby, my wife just kind of shrugs and says "well, that another excuse to buy expensive tools or equipment....."

That's so weird my wife does the same thing, and.... she seems to be traveling a lot, I wonder...
I'd love to try skydiving, haven't done that yet. In my younger days when I was in whistler I was doing a lot of heli-skiing and boarding, which helped with a volunteer gig in fire attack where we learned how to jump out of a helicopter at low altitudes, that was fun. We also share the high end cooking, road and mtn bike genes!
Looking forward to your work on the shovel head. Do you have a thread on it? I'm in Las Vegas most of this week and weekend but hope to get started on this work next week sometime.
