Default Changing Rocker Boxes

I have a 2003 Fatboy and want to change the rocker boxes. It seems like an easy job. Remove the gas tank, slowly loosen the 6 bolts in the reverse order of the torque pattern, change the boxes and gaskets, tighten the bolts to proper torque specs and pattern, re-install the tank. Am I missing anything? This seems like a relatively easy afternoon job.

Are you changing both top and bottom boxes?
If just the tops, you are correct.

I'd drill and chamfer the oil return holes and replace the plastic breathers with stamped steel units. If you are indeed doing top and bottom rocker boxes that would be a good time to attend to the tensioners because you've done 40% of the work.

Unfortunately, I recently took care of the tensioners. I wish I had bought the new boxes 1st. I will be doing top and bottom boxes, and it sounds like I am in for more of a project than I thought.

Not really.

Clean out the holes for the rocker support plate and breathers before you reassemble. You did the tensioners so you've been there before unless you cut the push rods and put in adjustables.

I paid for the tensioners because I upgraded cams while I was there. A BB kit is in the future as well but want to change the rocker boxes now because they are in really bad shape. The BB kit is probably another year away.

HD Shop Manual = Very Doable project

Go step by step, have a torque wrench available for reassembly and you should be fine. I would get all gaskets, breathers etc from HD so everything matches the manual.

Good luck.
