Default Night Train Upgrade

I was thinking about upgrading my 100th Anniversary Night Train and wondered what else I would need to upgrade if I went with a Jim's 120" crate motor.

Forget the Jim's motor. Send your motor to one of our forum sponsors for a 124" built to your particular needs; cheaper and better results. Call Scott at Hillside Cycles and Kirby at VeeTwin Performance and if one or the other gives you the warm and fuzzy, strike a deal.

My motor started knocking a little down by the cams so I'm sure it's the plastic chain tensioner. Been wanting to increase the HP and figured now's a good time.
I originally planned on just getting geared cams next month anyway but started wondering about a new engine instead.

Replacing the motor is pretty radical fix for tensioner failure. Why not go bigger bore, geared cams, head work and a tune? Much cheaper, less labor, a DIY project and a measureable performance upgrade. Of course, check crank run out before ordering geared cams.

Well crap! I guess I just needed somebody to tell me what I already know. New motor sounded really cool though.
I know about the crank run-out so if it's running true, any suggestions on cams?
And I've seen some big bore kits on J&P. There's multiple CI's available. Anybody had any experience or recommendations on them? 120" minimum is kinda what I want but it's really going to depend on the feedback I get. I'm also looking at the Baker 6 speed direct drive kit.

Lot's of aftermarket cams to choose from and selection will depend on how you ride; where do you want the power? Cams are the place to start and will dictate head work, maybe throttle body; remember, all the parts have to play well together. I would suggest that you contact our forum sponsors; Scott at Hillside Cycles and Kirby at VeeTwin Performance and see what they have to say; they can help you put together a build plan that will produce the desired results.

If seriously looking at a 120"-124" motor, they can help you with that as well but if you go that route, you should pass on the Baker DD6 and go for the OD6. The DD6 is not intended for large displacement motors.

I'm not an engine builder and far from an expert but I have modified many 88" engines. The right cam alone as you have probably read over and over makes a huge difference in performance. I am also a believer in doing it right the first time. In other words do not install a cam designed for a future modification. If your plan is bigger barrels and heads then do it all at once.

Worked with Che at The Chop Shop and here's what we're going with.
S&S Cycle Power Package, 4" Bore, 585GE Gear Drive and S&S Cycle Super Stock Cylinder Head Kit.

Should be a runner. Consider sending your heads to one of our forum sponsors in lieu of an off the shelf cylinder head.
