Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
While some seem to think that the 07s were bad because the cranks twisted. 03 were worse.. It was the first year for straight rollers on the left side of the crank.. Prior to that year twincams (and evos, shovels and later pans) used a timken bearing set on that side of the crank (much stronger).. The straight roller setup uses the edge of the bearing and washers to set end-play. The 03s were known to blow the edge of the race out when pumping up the motor. HD later changed the bearing to control the issue.. It was often called the Screaming eagle lefty bearing. That pretty much corrected the problem and is what all the later twin-cams use. There was also a change to the torque spec on the compensator nut and a check to ensure proper tightening of compensator / rotor / bearing stack, which were supposed to help. Still I'd keep the build low unless you want to risk blowing out that bearing.. Another option is to replace it with the new one. Simply buy a new bearing from HD and you get the upgraded bearing.. Unfortunately you need to tear the motor all the way down and split the cases to replace that bearing.
Now a larger create motor is starting to look more optimal. Still there are a bunch of ways to go like adding timken bearing to your stock cases. Making the motor into a 124 with timkens etc.. SnS motors are a good option.. their 124s are pretty bullet proof.
