I just purchased a used 2016 ultra low with 1,771 mi.. I just topped 2083 mi and it shut off in the middle of now where. oil lite came on. pushed the bike to the side of the road. checked oil level and no oil on the dipstick.
This bike has Cobra pipes and intake with a tune. Should this be consuming oil?
I have a 2013 heritage set up the same way with no oil consumption??
great question, NO, i did not. stupid me. the dealer showed me how to check it but i was so exicted i didn't look at the level. just wondering if there has been any issues.
live and learn.
I would do a fluid change and after 1k check oil and measure to see if it's burning. When I picked up the yamaha a few people told me how at a different dealer a service kid put around 12 wr250r's out for customers with no oil or coolant. Some techs are worthless, not even worth the air they breathe.
If you need something to measure oil I use a ratio rite. Helps with any time you need to measure a liquid say for doing fork oil or in my case as a kid, mixing gas for a 2 stroke.
Also reading your original post again. When you shut the bike off the oil light should pop on as the pump isn't pumping anymore. If the lights on when running that's a problem.
Yamaharley,
called the dealer, he said drive it in and they would check it out and change the fluids, look for codes; found no codes, it ran fine going over; no lights etc; they are going to change fluids and i will drive it as you suggested. doing it under warranty seeing as I've only had the bike two weeks. I will post a note if they find any issues.
thanks so much for your assistance.
I don't know if the touring bikes can or not because they basically have a build in oil pan, but my softail sumped on me one time after sitting all winter. I added like 2 quarts and made it about 100 feet down the road. Blew the oil cap right off, soaking my right leg, my bike, and putting a real nice oil slick down on the road. Just something to think about if it sat on the floor for any length of time.
If its not physically leaking it anywhere, then its either burning it (consuming it), or it was never filled properly. Makes me wonder if thats not why the PO traded it back in??? Either way, Hope you got a warranty. Don't be afraid to use it. Wouldn't matter if this happened at 300 miles, or 3000... that should definitely be a no questions asked warranty repair.
