Mikuni 42 replacing OEM '97 80 Evo

Appreciate that. Funny, I've got an EV27 waiting in an Amazon shopping cart, just continuing the research a bit until I pull the trigger. I figure since I need to replace the gaskets to repair the oil leak, may as well get the .030 head gasket while I'm at it. Thanks again!

I have a good feeling about what everyone who has responded has suggested. It gives me enough for what I can afford for now. When she's due for some serious maintenance, I'll bring her up to the point of needing to use a strap to keep my glasses from flying off.

Back to your carb. Replacing it falls back to the idea everything HD ever built sucks and must be replaced with someone else idea. Everyone I ever knew that replace the HD CV card regretted it. Spent a lot of money and time to go backwards. The factory HD CV carb on my 1996 is still doing just fine. Funny how to this day bike is stock and still runs great not all screwed up like so many of the improved upgrade ones that are a mess.
Sure you can get some power out of an EVO , but if you go that route do it right and don't over do it.

One thing you will notice with the HSR is immediate throttle response, something that can’t tuned out of the CV due the vacuum slide. The CV can tuned to help that issue however it won’t go away due to the design. That stated I wouldn’t spend the extra $400 to replace the CV unless it’s really needed.
I used CV-Performance jets and emulsion tube and their needle and I’ll say all used in combination really makes the CV a much better responsive carburetor. I’m running a 48 pilot, 180 main, CVP velocity needle and velocity emulsion tube. About $60 worth of parts.
