Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Damn Max, Very impressive observation of the video. So I pulled my Cylinders and pistons today. The rear is literally burnt up. Piston and cylinder walls severely scored. The rings were almost seized to the pistons. Front was bad but not near as bad as the rear. Probably because the front catches more air when under way. Carbon build up and some loose pieces on both but more on the rear. Heads and valves look good other than some carbon. I immediately thought lack of oil after seeing the video. Any thoughts? I will try to post some pics tomorrow. Thanks for all your input.
Seizing is lack of lubrication but a bad tune can generate excessive heat. I'd check the pump and caplate pressure relief, tune and fuel pressure. Is the bike stock?
Hey Max....it has a stage 1 on it. V&H Big Radius pipes, Big sucker air cleaner and V&H Fuel Pack 3. I did the exact remap called for and have been running it with that setup since about 500 miles on the bike. It now has around 17,500. So close to 17000 miles before it burnt up.

Understood, It seems like an oil pressure issue more than tune. I'd check the pump and plate, possibly replace the piston oilers. It could be something like a bad crank (some have limited life span) but you need to look closer. Pistons will have specs of metal. Pictures would help here, There a few motor rebuilders here that might be able to see something.
Awesome, Thanks Max. Another thing that points to lack of oil for me is also the fact it never smoked. I am by no means a mechanic but it seems to me if there were oil present at the pistons it should have been smoking when it got hot enough to burn up or I would have been burning a lot of oil and It did neither. Either way thanks for your time helping with this. It is nice to know there are other riders out there that give a **** about what's going on.
So I went all in today, Ordered an S&S 106 top end kit, S&S MR103C cams, Feuling HP Camplate and fuel pump and some new tensioner pads. I am still going to to check fuel mixture for sure and probably do a dyno. Wish me luck
Hell I have an 05 fatboy ..... put ss510 gear cams in .... all great 3 weeks later i hear a ticking sound in the front cylinder
thought well **** owm lifters crapped out ... so i did the ss premium lifter and pushrods
set at 3.5 turns .... rocker lockers installed all done exactly bu the book ...
still ticks .... so i tore it down to the pistons .... put new gaskets torqued everything down as per spec .... cant fine anything
Im thinking timing is a little advanced ... i run a thundermax and it looks like my pmugs are running a little whitish .... but I cant get away from the sound of a tappet loose in the front exhaust ... i even pulled the stethascope out and listened and thats what it sounds like .... i had the heads completely apart checked for bent valve , replaced valve guide seals .... every thing looked percect cleaned rmcarbon off , new plugs retuned .... ****ing thing still ticks like a bitch

I'm chasing the same thing, front cylinder. It gets faster with engine speed and there's a very fine line between like 1900 and 2100 rpms where it's the quietest, I'm only in that range putting through my town or other small towns. When you listen with the stethoscope on the head it's the loudest there right? Mine echoes up into the rocker covers, did rocker lockers, and s and s lifters last season and saw nothing obviouslywrong then. I'm just taking it easy on her to get through the season then I'll tear it down. I might try to make a video t0 post...its driving me crazy because I feel like people are looking at the bike because of the racket it makes lol. Oh and it's a 2008 cvo road king
Loudest on the left side fromt cinder ... with scope ... rear cinder is smooth
its weird .... i was pumped figured new lifters would be magic ..... no difference AT ALL !! Rocker lockers no differemce ! I have new shafts and rocker arm bushing to do next ...... im not real sure it isnt timing now as ive had mine aprart like 8 times now ....
