Looking to switch to gear drive cams in my 06 Softail Standard. I want it to be noisy, just like the old Pete Jackson car engine gear drives. Does anyone know of a shop that makes those straight cut and noisy
If you are lookin for atn install a really big cam and loud pipes.............
It will be all noise and no go until you hit about 3500RPM.
Personally, I would spend my money on something else.........
Most cam gears are straight cut. I think woods is the only ones helical. Maybe get a custom straight cut gear drive primary machined? Would be super cool.

If your cam gears whine like you describe in your HD, your gears are too tight - not enough clearance. Not enough clearance means no room for oil between the meshing gear teeth and extremely high stresses on the gears and associated parts like pinion shaft and cam plate bearings. This will eventually lead to broken parts.
I remember the old Pete Jackson gear drives and the whine you're talking about. You're not going to replicate that in your HD if everything is set up correctly.
I'd shoot for proper clearence in the set-up, and not worry about the noise.
One bike I have does have a whine, when deccelerating...1967 FLH, but that has a gear train in it, along with a generator.

I just replaced cams on my RK. Had first oversized inner cam cam gear, Whined for about 45000 miles, How much longer before it blows up? Gears and bearings looked fine. Current setup whines when cold, should I be worried?
