The HD Dealer quoted a cost of $7000 depending on the upgrades involved. Mine is a 2007 FLHT with 140,000 miles. I'm looking at returning to bone stock using as many stock parts/covers/cams as possible. What are your experiences and what did you pay?

Just had it done to my 2005 Ultra. $7000 isn't too bad when you consider the $100 per hr labor rate and the extras that you will need. I was lucky that I didn't need a new clutch, and chain tensioner, chain, etc. Reminder that Cams are extra and if you want to upgrade your lifters and push rods that is going to add to it. I looked into the S&S 111's and 124's, they require a larger throttle body, air cleaner to fit, new clutch to be safe and a ECM program and then you will want a Dyno tune after break-in. By the time I got through trying to save as much $ as I could with the S&S it was $10K +. just for the 111. Looking on this forum and others, The HD long blocks (103, 107) with a cam will give you an easy 100/100 + and a two year warranty.
Scour the classified for a "take out" ... One recently listed here for $2500.00 with documented mileage
And I am pretty local to the seller. I'd be happy to go have a look at it if you're inclined. R&Ring an engine is no big deal but even if you have someone do it you might be money ahead on the take out engine that's for sale. Of course the savings goes out the window if you buy the take out engine, install it and then start building a fire breather out of your old engine

Check your local motor vehicle regulations as your current motor may be on your bikes Title and if you replace the motor there are rules you may have to follow? That is how it works in Californa, thus I went with the long block program as Harley takes your old motor and give you a new motor with the same serial number.
Is it worth putting $7k into a bike with 140k miles on it? You could find a similar garage queen for not much more than that.
My '03 has parts vibrating apart. I used to think I would put a new engine in it if it blew, but now I think I would get a new one. Or a garage queen .

I agree. I still have a 2003 RKC that is my baby. Had a total rebuild done in 2014 at 85K on the clock. I should have just walked away. The bike is now 15 years old. Just little things that you have to put up with. It's now my second bike and it's just getting annoying. I get being attached to a bike, but for me, I finally talked myself into getting rid of my 03. I have a 2015 RGS for the long haul. I'll replace the 03 with either an ADV, sport touring, or?? But if I had to do it over again, I'd walk.
