Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I am looking for input if I should change the inner cam bearings while changing to hydraulic cam chain tensioners. I would need to buy the tool to remove the bearings and the Torrington bearings. Estimate is another 100 bucks plus my time. Are the stock bearings that bad that they should be replaced at 20K miles?
The stock INA bearings have a history of failure. And when they fail, it''s catastrophic. Spend the $100 bucks on a tool, far cheaper than a new motor. When you buy the Torrignton's, compare; you'll see the difference.
I know a plant mechanic that used blind puller. Then used old cams to tap new ones in. I can't say for sure, but he probaby had learned how on other peoples equipment. I used George garage tools Though now a days I think there are other options. Not that his were bad.
Yes, listen to what others said.
My TC88 at 33,000 well serviced miles had a chirp. This is where the chirp came from. Tensioners were worn maybe a thumbnail thickness. Inner caged bearings wore the cam journal and looked good to the eye. Enlarge the picture if you can't see what I'm talking about. I'll let the experts decide what happened.
HTH
Edit: The tensioners show how little wear compared to bearing damage. They did not contribute to the chirp. Just wanted to make that clear.

No pic. But we have seen tons of them and don't need to see another. To my knowledge the hydraulic have been ok. I would like to hear if not. So soon current generation won't even know about them, just like the twin cam tick
