You don't have to back them off, you can plainly see the amount of wear. If you want to inspect the surface of the outer tensioner for pitting, grab it with the tool of your choice and rotate it back; you will find this near impossible with the inner piece but can assume whatever pitting you see on the outer will be similar to the inner. Service manual says 50% wear is service limit and time for replacement. Depends on the exhaust gasket material. If OEM, it would be a good idea to change to the crushed SS gaskets. I have not changed gaskets everytime pipes are R/R'd but dealer's choice.
For out outside pad, I used a large pair of channel locks wrapped to protect the metal from marring. For the inside I used a screwdriver to lift it just enough to see in there with a dental mirror and light (which hardly showed anything and left me wondering).
How much wear? This one is funny to me because look at these pics. The pads looked great until you peeled them back and see that the overall wear was just fine but there were big chunks missing from the pads. And guess where I found them? Oil pump. Had to replace it all. Went with gear drive S&S.
As far as the exhaust gasket, Re-using them will likely cause an exhaust leak which can lead to broken stud bolts when you think you just need to keep tightening it, just get new ones, they're cheap.
Outer pad "Looks great" Outer pad pulled all the way back. Those missing chunks are a problem. Both pads once I gutted the cam chest. Those chunks scored the oil pump and were also found in the cam chest.
