Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
You're on the right track. I personally believe anything more than 88" is too much on any HD starter (within typical compression values, of course). When I built my dad's 95" it was 9.5:1 with stock heads and flat tops with a brand new battery and all connections between starter and battery and it still cranked slowly. S&S EZ-Start cams made quick work of the issue though.
$290 if you bring the heads in sounds crazy. It should be right in line with those prices you got for Big Boyz at any real shop. There's a local shop in Vacaville but that would be a 45 min stretch for you. Try RC cycles in Hayward.
The releases themselves are usually $30-$50 a piece depending on what kind you get. You can shop around online and get them even cheaper. I would recommend those with the plastic cap, usually offered in any color. I had a friend all about chrome go with chrome cap ones and those are what burn the sh*t out of your finger on a long day of riding.
As for the machining it its quick and easy for them and I think the going rate around here is $40 a pop.
