Default S&S 509 cam question

I have a 2003 Ultra with the original TC88 engine and the 509 cam.

I am thinking about having the original jugs bored to 95-96” and have the original heads mildly modified.

I cant fint any info on the internet how the 509 cam reacts to that modification ☹

Can anyone her perhaps tell my if it is no go or if it is pretty good ?

YES I know I can change cam etc, so that is not the question ;-)….

PS I don’t want a fast rocket, just a smooth ride with great acceleration

Thanks
Claus - Denmark

I guess the question is: are you happy with the power characteristics of the 509 in your current set up?
More displacement and head work will certainly enhance what you have now

The conventional wisdom is if you are paying for overbore, you might as well go 98"

I get the "not looking for a rocket" , but given the expense and work involved I think you`ll want/expect a difference you can feel

Determine the max compression recommended by S&S for 509 then

Google Big Boyz Compression Calculator" and experiment.

Short answer, Yes the 509 will work

The OP can retain the 509 with a 98" upgrade (yes, 98" not 95"; same cost) but would advise to add compression releases to head and retain the stock chamber volume and definitely purchase a tuner or a license and have the motor properly dyno tuned. The downside to retaining the 509 cams is that lower lift will not take advantage of better breathing heads, so it's two steps forward and one step back. I am with eighteight, if spending the money for bigger bore and better breathing heads, there are many other cams that will better support the new 98" configuration. Has nothing to do with "not looking for a rocket" and everything to do with maximizing the potential for the new build with the time and cost invested, it's call ROI.

Thanks for your input – it puts things into perspective

I will be happy with what I got, and if I want to say A= bigbore and headswork – I must also say B=other cam

Makes sence 😉

Not must, you can run it with the 509 and see if you like it or want more. The 509 was designed as a bolt in with stock heads. If you improve your headflow characteristics and depending on some other factors, it might make sense to choose a different cam. Are you going to have compression releases? Are you going to use better valve springs? Do you have a good exhaust system and air cleaner? You have to think about the complete pictue.

Sorry - I am new in the twincam world and trying to learn, and I come from Denmark where you just can get advice and buy parts 😉

I have now read a lot of threads where rookies as me are adviced to go 98” 👍

Can you please guide me to a link/eBay/parts#
for the pistons to look for ?

What does OP and ROI means ? 🙈

Thanks / Claus

BTW - I will install a Thundermax

I am partial to CP pistons but there are plenty of others; JE, Wiseco, Mahle, Arias and Keith Black come to mind. Don't know if all offer pistons in 3.938" bore (98") but do know that CP and Wiseco dffer forged units that are popular choices in that bore.

Welcome to the forum; lots of help here so don't hesitate to ask. If you don't have the HD service manual for your bike, you should get one. A bit pricey but worth it.

We have built several 98"/.509 combos.
Large early torque.
Another one being built currently.
