Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Ok people. I am starting to plan a build for my 2004 electra glide classic. I love the old classic look and want to stick with this bike.
I want to buy a used engine and build it up over time.
I want to stick with a twin cam, but will be doing a big bore, cams, head work etc.
If I was doing it all again,I'd probably buy a drop in from S&S. DONE! My notion is based on the fact that I already had to replace the Harley crank with a superior one ----an S&S. The cams I chose are -- S&S 585's. I would have loved to built a 114 or 117 but to do that with my 06 TC it would have been about another $2 -$3 K and that total is about the same cost as the crate engines from S&S and you get some warranty with that. So, if you ain't hung up on keeping it all Harley just go to the S&S website and oggle what they have to offer.
Forged crank, Timken left side crank bearing, cam position sensor deleted and rear outer cam bearing changed to a roller bearing. The only thing you have to watch for is miles on early cam chain tensioners. If I had to take a TC A engine that wasn't an 01 or 02 it would be an 03. They have a cold forged crank (as opposed to hot forged 99-02) and a roller bearing on both ends in lieu of a Timken. Not optimum but in my opinion better that what came after.
Nuts and bolts. Alot of over heating issues from what I have seen and heard (my friends bikes) and 1 or 2 had oil issues.
Ok so for the 02 engine. If it is a carb'd engine, would there be any issues going from carb'd to injection.
Are the heads on the 02 good, or would you guys recommend a different year head assemblies ?. Heads will be reworked.
Thanks for the input, I was thinking 02. Thanks Prodrag for chiming in. You would be the one to do head work and cylinder work for me!!!!!!!
