Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Sorry I was in a hurry and forgot to delete the 103 in my post.
I have a 05 Ultra that the motor went south at +50K. 98 Kit -Rocker arm failed which took out the head (cracked valve seat), cam, found scored cylinders and the crank bad.
Had new Head unit and stereo system, tires, breaks, motor mount, swing arm bushings all replaced in the fall of the prior year so when it came to deciding on a rebuild of the 98 or the 103 Long Block or a new S&S it came down to adding the cost of "do I need to replace the exhaust, and clutch with + 50K miles, Throttle body, injectors and Air intake to get my $ worth out of the build" or use my current setup with a rebuild of the 98 or the 103. (bought would get me in to the 100/100 HP/TQ range) I chose the HD route with the HD warranty (any problems I could take it to any dealer for work). So I now have a 2005 Ultra with all the chrome, accessories (creature comforts) and a New motor. I'll never get my $$ out of it but I didn't buy it for an investment, I bought it to ride.
Hope you find out its not going to be this involved or expensive but do your cost Analysis / (your) preferences.
Good Luck.

Well, since you had gear drive cams done, it didnt eat a shoe. My bet then would go to a lifter took a ****. Depending on how it tanked (just collapsed, or the roller blew out....) it may not be that bad. Wait and see what the shop says, and go from there.
I have an 01 ultra and was rear ended a couple of years back. I had the bike rebuilt under insurance and then also had the motor rebuilt to a hot rod 95". Yeah, I spent too much, but I love the bike and figured I will get another 20 years out of it.
Do what makes you happy, not what makes the most financial sense. Money will come and go. Great toys should never be sold.
