72 ( 1000cc ) heads will not fit on the `57-`71 900cc barrels.

You are correct the head bolts will not line up

EDIT; Take your old head gasket with you when shopping for replacements

Default My Frankenstein

Thanks I have looked through the sportsterpedia but can't seem to find answers as to why my engine has 1000cc jugs with stamped 71 heads , crankcase is stamped H1(1971) .
I bought a new James gasket set for late 73 thru 85 because the picture showed the same gaskets as I had removed but not knowing they changed bolt configuration but all gaskets fit perfect.
Bore is 3 & 5/16 which has been sleeved prior, sleeve has been bored out .040 oversize (82mm) many years ago , no obvious signs of holes or studs being tampered with to make parts fit.
Could it be a factory make or more likely someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make it a 1000cc sportster

'72 was the first year for the 1,000 cc motor. My friend bought a crate motor back then to replace the flathead motor he blew up. I think it was a '54?. We thought all they did was bump up the bore to gain a couple of cc's over the 900. He wrecked it a few months later, then went whole hog and chopped it. He bought a new frame. 22 inch over stock Springer front end, custom paint, which was cheap in those days. Alot of parts he made custom himself to fit the frame. Drag pipes were pretty much the only exhaust you could get off the shelf in those days, and he tuned it with shortening the baffles until it ran how he liked it. I remember he raced another friend of ours who had a Norton. They raced a 1/4 mile on rt 1 in Elizabeth, and the Norton got him by half a bike. A real run what you made time.,,,

try the xlforum and reach out to hippysmack
hd never threw away anything as my 1974 was more 1973 so transition years could have morphodites.
