Default Evo cam chest cover replacement

Lot’s of opinions out there regarding the reaming necessary for the bushing in the cam cover. Looking for input regarding replacing my peeling cam cover with a replacement OEM cover. Is it possible to stake and ream the cam bushing in a replacement cover using an engine case or jig instead of the original engine case? Was there enough variability in the engine manufacturing tolerances to make using the original case necessary or can a jig suffice? Any real world repeated experience greatly appreciated. While some folks may have gotten lucky one time, I’m hoping there is someone out there that has done this intentionally more than once with predictable results.

My bike is a ‘98 Low Rider with 4700 original miles. While I want to bring it back to as new looking as possible, I don’t want to start creating expensive problems down the road. If the cam cover cannot be replaced without using the original case to ream a new bushing I’ll live with the “patina” of the peeling chrome.

Thanks in advance for any straight talk.

I believe rechroming the original case may damage the original bushing.

Not been my experience with cam covers
sportsters and flatheads
they mask the bushing(s) etc

I have a right side case for doing just that. Have done a lot of them & never had a problem.
