Default 05 Deluxe 95 build

A close friend just got his first Harley a 2005 Deluxe and he asked me about the 95” big bore. Long story short he has no money got divorced and his X beat his wallet bad. He picked this bike up (his first bike) it has 54,000 miles has python staggered exhaust an S&S super E. Got the bike for $4800.

I have a set of 15000 mile 103 cylinders he wants which I have no problem giving him. I also am going to give him my old 09 96 heads. His bike has a set of cams already installed and I assume there too big because the low to mid range is terrible? He already bought a set of used but almost new SE 95” flat top pistons. He bought the Dyna TC88 ignition module and I have a set of brand new HD rings. He also picked up a Cometic 0.030 head gasket. I suggested depending on what cams he has in there already a set of Andrews 48s or SE 204s.

the 103 and the 95 are the same cylinders, if you want to go to a 103 you need new flywheels, bore out this original cylinders to the 95" or for more power get the 98" kit.
anymore questions just ask. dsv

I know that........that’s why I gave him my 103 cylinders for his 95 pistons.

Better to bore your buddy's cylinders to fit the new/used 95" pistons. Without measuring piston fitment to the 103 cylinders, in torque plates, fitment could be out of spec; the piston to cylinder wall fitment spec is very tight for the SE cast piston, like .0006"-.0015" IIRC. Rings need to be gapped to those new/used pistons as well. Using the later heads is a good idea; the '05 heads had valve guides seal issues which can be addressed but the later heads do flow better. With the flat top pistons, a .030: head gasket should be included in the top end build and the 48 cams a better choice than the 204s IMHO.

Thanks DJ, I will have him bring the cylinders with the heads then when he gets the valve job done. I pulled the heads when I did my 103 to put 2015 103 heads on because I wanted the ACRs.

Also any jetting suggestions on the super E it’s not one of my favorite carbs I like the CV better. I actually have a good CV 40 should I convince him to put that on instead?

The current cams installed seem to be SE211s and I only say this because it idles real lopey and would explain the loss of low and mid range.

First bike
Short on funds

if it’s running reasonably well perhaps he could just ride it until skills and finances improve

I am not a fan of the Super E either. IMHO, the CV is an under rated carburetor. If you can talk him into the CV, he won't regret; much easier to tune IMHO.
