Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
My bike is randomly dying at startup. It starts fine, then will die after 1 second or less. I start it back up and it runs and rides fine. I have a DynoJet Power Vision hooked up, but I can't say for certain that caused it. It was also opened up about 1000 miles ago and a new oil pump installed. The electrical is all fine, no check engine light or anything. There was a little white stuff on the dipstick today, wearer had been below freezing recently, but I still start it up, get it warm, and ride pretty far when there is no ice on the roads
It's a high compression motor at about 135psi and I sometimes forget to hit the pressure relief valves before startup, if that mashes a difference. Any help would be appreciated. I ride very far on this bike and don't want to be stranded.
My bad. I am new to this forum and didnt realize my signature with my build info is hidden. Its an 05 RK Injected with 95" Screamin Eagle build. High compression heads, high lift cams, true dual exhaust, hydraulic cam kit.

Did this issue start all of a sudden or has the bike been acting up for some time?
Are you sure there are no codes stored? Google how to check for codes using the speedo, its an easy procedure.
Do you hear the fuel pump prime when initially cycling the key?
Some things I would check
1 if you actually have fuel in it
2 fuel pressure
3 crank sensor signal
4 when it dies and stops running do you still have spark at the plugs?
Start a log with the PV when you start, then start a log on the restart, Download to your computer and go through the recorded items and compare, you may find the cause.

It started around the same time winter started getting colder, so I was not sure if that was the cause. It was also around the same time the hydraulic cam plate was done. Fuel is fine, I can immediately start it right back up, give it a little gas, then it runs fine and I take it out. Can hear the fuel pump prime, and when it dies I even get a little pop sometimes when I start it again from extra fuel in there from the cycle before where it cut off.

Could something have been done incorrectly during the install of the cam plate? So after you twist the throttle and get it running again does it then run fine? Does it seem low on power?

Runs great, little on the loud side, plenty of power.
a engine needs a richer mixture to run when cold. right off hand, check the sensor that tells the ecu it is cold/hot. it could very well be just a connection. there are several things that can go wrong from a sticking fuel pressure regulator to loss of crank sensor input. if you can data log with the PV, it might shed some light on what is going on. for grins and giggles, warm the machine up via external heat source and see what happens.
