Smoke on startup 71 ironhead
i bought this in 1974, took it out of the crate myself back when as shops did allow you to enter the work area. the only thing i did was extreme maintenance. the oil was changed every 2k miles, yes an over-kill but for what oil was back then, i do not look back. today as it sits, i add a oil filter to it and extended the change to 3k miles. i use series 3 diesel engine oil.
in 1975, i totaled it out taking off the front end of a 1972 impala, and it did not have plastic bumpers either. since the cast steel pieces were in tact, i put the frame on a steel table and straighten the frame using temp paint sticks, heat and hydraulics. at around 75k, it started to have issues with rpm, turned out to be a broken valve spring, probably suffered damage when the engine came to an abrupt stop in the wreck. heads off, bird in hand, installed bronze valve guide (mistake). around 175k, frame was ratty so bird in hand, up'd the ponies as described. it still runs the stock original lifters but did change one tappet block (used a jims). the heads went to V&V iron guides and ss valves and andrews springs ( i think ) and andrews y cams.
i am amazed at it too since i did not show mercy and often took 2k mile trips riding 2 up.
i do not think my 01 sport will fair that good. i do not trust the cylinder, will replace with cast iron when the time comes. it does run circles around the ch.
yes, the cam chest was updated. never had issue with the tranny, never touched. i did blue print it clearance wise and shifts without clunk.
