This is the top piston ring from my front cylinder on my 103. The whole top ring looks like it wants to separate. There are chunks missing from the center in several spots.

Bad piston ring.... BAD!

That looks more like metal has been deposited in those spots than there's metal missing. I bet the cylinder bore is a mess. Some more/better pictures would help. Im no psychic but I see a big bore in your future.

good sir you are wrong. Lol. Those black spots on the ring is where metal is missing. You can stick your fingernail in there and feel it. And yes a 107 is already in the works. And yes the bore was a mess

How do the piston tops and skirts look? Scored badly? And how about the condition of the second ring? And, how do the spark plugs look?

I suspect the engine may have overheated causing detonation and possible metal sticking to the cylinders. But serious detonation can cause a whole host of problems starting at the top of the piston and ring. A look at the other components may help identify the cause.

The second ring was fine the piston was also ... and the second cylinder was too... and plugs were ok. The only thing i can think of is a day that my PC5 took a crap and therefore the bike was pinging a bit, I took it off and bought a TTS. The bike ran great after that, no issues. I was making some more changes recently and stuck a borescope in the cylinder and seen some scoring of the cylinder. So i decided to rip it all apart and look at it. Then i found this...

There are such things as bad parts and inconsistencies in making them. This might be the issue here. One bad ring spoiled the bunch.

Since I'm wrong can you post a picture thats not a half a millimeter away? Sure looks like an awful clean smooth break where you're saying there's metal missing but yet where metal is still there you can see cracks along the edges. Not trying to argue but it sure looks like the first two rings and not just one. Hard to believe a single ring is separated like that...but bad parts happen.

no to see it clearly that is a picture that was taken with a zoom lens really close up. Please don’t insult my intelligence. I know the difference and am not some run of the mill guy who don’t know his way around a motor.
