Hey guys. I have an 80 fxef shovelhead. Runs fine. Starts right up every now when idling it will randomly pop through the carb and sometimes shut off but then starts right back up. Any advice on where to look? S&S carb don't know much else being I just got the bike not long ago.
dual fire?
electronic or points?
idle rpm?
carb properly adjusted?
not every cylinder will fire every time and on a dual fire this becomes evident with cough back die syndrome. my 74 ch would do it, went to electronic and for the most part ended the issue. i use the no bells no whistles compu-fire system and accell 50k coil. it seems the beast knew when to do it when you are in a bind and need to go. i installed an electric foot. i also run the mikuni vm round slide carb and that ended the accel pump being needed. also cold starts was a one lever push and no touch throttle.
New to working on bikes but it is electronic single fire s&s super e adjusted properly (from everything I looked up and tried) I will get a pop or to on take off from time to time and also just idling. Problem is intermittent
stock ign? does coil have two or three primary terminals?
on take off, the accel pump could be an issue.
might try richen the idle, a lean out can cause cough back
Sounds like a lean condition, so the above mentioned items, and check for a vaccum leak at the manifold. I believe the 80 shovels used the large band seal, but they can still split and leak.
super +1 mr. pg
there were the band and o-ring
i use high temp glass tape like used in oven wiring on top of the seal. two reasons, holds it in place while fiddling with the clamps and second, it seals the joint when engine heat meets the adhesive. this is a bear to get off but it will not leak. does not take much, about one wrap forward and one reverse.
