Default So, I think I'm effed.....debris in oil pan

Not sure how the eff this happened. Went to do the simple task of changing oil (2019 FLHRXS). I always pull the drain plug first, and then loosen the dipstick to make sure the butterflies in the heads are ok. When I pulled the dipstick, about 1/4 of the O-ring on the dipstick was gone......the O-ring was still in place, but part of it went into the oil pan. I looked...couldn't see anything. I put the plug back in the pan and put in 2 quarts of oil, and then drained it again to see if it would come out. Even poked around in the drain plug with a pick to see if I could get it. No luck.

Should I roll the dice and hope it either stays in the bottom of the pan, to somehow gets chewed up in the gerotors and happily makes its way to the filter? Or do I have to pull the pan and fish it out?

Like I said....I think I'm effed......

why the hell does an easy job always turn into a major issue........

It's not in the crankcase. It's in the oil bag that bolts to the bottom of the transmission. Lot of baffles and traps before actual oil pick up pulled by pump. If the oil pump does get it, it will be flatten like pork going thru a grinder making sausage. Then to the filter.

It will be never ever get past the filter.

I personally would not give it a second thought. That oil pump is extremely hardened steel.

If it gives you warm fuzzy fillings and the doom and gloom post follows, lift bike and drop the oil bag.

DeeRoe.. one question about one thing in your post about one way pop-it valve vent system. They are similar what you see in a snorkel. They are open one way out when motor is running. Normal, shut. When you popped up dipstick, what did you think they did?

I guess the proper term is the oil separator that sits on top of the rockers. If this fails, ther is more than just a “mist” that comes out of the breather tubes into the intake. By checking this when I change my oil, I guess I’m just making sure they’re working correctly.

There is no failing. One way out. High rpm or a worn out motor will loose a little oil control. What most see is when a Harley sets, it drains and looks bigger then it is from the pipe walls covered in oil. The intake is just atmosphere in. It won't pull actual liquid oil. Just a little mist in the vent gas.

The little bit of lubrication oil coming up thru the ring gaps is more then what goes in intake.
