Default Cam choice

I am getting close to getting the cam, bearings, lifters, pushrods etc done on the bike and I have the luxury of having two cams from which to choose, an Andrews EV13 and an Andrews EV27.

Originally, I believed the EV13 was going to be the better choice but tonight I was browsing some info regarding both cams and now believe the EV27 is going to be the most beneficial for the bike and for my wants and here is why:

EV27
The 27 has a broad torque band and pulls HARD between 2000 rpms and 5500 rpms.

EV13
The 13 on the other hand also has a broad torque band but that doesn't come in until 2600 rpms and goes through to 6000 rpm.

I believe the 27 covers my riding range (rpm wise) better than the 13. May not be that much difference but there you have it.

What bike? What other mods. Is it otherwise stock?
I believe you may have your descriptions switched
andrews 13 will come on a little sooner than the 27
The 27 will benefit from a little bump in compression.
If running the 27's I would deck the heads 0.050. Standard hop up back in the day. Ran the 27 in my FXR

@tdrglide

The bike pictured in my sig 97 flstc with V&H Exhaust and S&S Air Cleaner and will have rebuilt Klein Carby, new bearings, pushrods, tappets etc etc.

Here is what is said about the EV27 and the EV13:

From Denis Kirk:
EV27 - Bolt-in street performance that pulls from 1500 to 6000 rpm
EV13 - Designed to provide more mid-range and upper-end power for street or touring use

Seems as though the specs of these things change depending on where you look ??? If I believe the above specs then the EV27 is perfect for my needs.

@tdrglide

One other thing, I thought it was the other way around as well, which is why I bought the 13; however, as mentioned every thing I have read in so far as comparisons go has the EV27 coming on a little earlier and going off a little earlier. The EV23 comes on even sooner at around 1500 rpms - 6000 rpms. That would work even better for me but I have enough cams as it is and am confused enough as it is.

Think I'll email Andrews and ask them.

Okay, so I found this chart that details the Specs of various Cams for HD - funnily there is no open and close details for the EV13?

Despite the lack of opening and closing figures for the 13 - those figures for the EV27 look good to me and look as though they will suit my riding perfectly - open low and has a long (broad) power range.

Straight from the Andrews catalog. Ev13 is the smaller of those two.

Should have got the EV23

Thanks and I'll be darned if I could find anything. Anyway, will stay with the EV27 unless I buy the EV23. I don't ride two up so I think the 13 would be wasted on me when all is said and done.

I wouldn't drop down to the 23, might be a bit tamer around town with less overlap and better MPG, but like you said solo riding not a big deal. I can't comment on whether the 27 would be too big, little experience with the EVO stuff, but I tend to err on the small side. If it were mine I'd do the 13, but I usually have a passenger.

Around town isn't a problem either as the nearest town (if you can call it that) is 12 miles away from me so 95% of my riding is country open roads. If I rode two up then I fully agree with you on the 13, that would be the best bet.

So I believe I am going to stick with the 27 and be done with it. To be honest, this has been a long drawn out process and I am just getting to the point where I want it finished. And honestly, any cam is going to be an improvement over the stock I think.

Ask around in the Evo Classic Models forum

Dennis Kirk is a warehouse and parts reseller. Can't always trust their information

FWIW, I had the ev27 in mine, hated the fact I had to always keep the revs above 2600 to keep the motor happy. Switched to a 13 and soo much better.Pulls right off idle to at least 4500.All depends how you ride.
