Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Recently bought a stock 03 road glide with the 88ci first day I had it I was riding at about 76 mph and it started knocking so I going to re build the engine but was looking at doing the 95ci big bore kit from S&S I was just curious if anyone could let me know what all I would need to install this kit I ordered a full gasket kit for the motor already.
second question I had was what is the biggest I could go without having to do crank case work if anyone could help guid me in the right direction it would be much appreciated

Well, do you know what in the engine was"knocking". Wouldn't be very smart to arbitrarily toss a big bore kit on an engine not knowing what else is wrong with it, let alone what mileage you are looking at.Then there is the issue of the spring loaded cam tensioners.. Which may be your issue. .Too many what ifs here.

First things first; find what is causing the "knocking", could be coming from several sources; more information on the knock like where does it sound like it's coming from; when does it present? Pretty important informationl.
Is the bike carbed or EFI? I assume the BB kit includes pistons/cylinders only? You are going to need a few things but first thing to get is the service manual for your bike. Read through the engine section, specically R/R of the top end at least three times before starting work. A good set of hand tools and a couple of special tools like ring compressor, ft.lb and in.lb torque wrenches, maybe wrist pin R/R tool. Also a good time to install a set of Rocker Lockers. Depending on mileage, new lifters would be a good idea. Replace the OEM head breathers with the later "stamped" parts. Depending on mileage consider having heads cleaned up, new guide seals and valve job.
