Winter Storage coming up soon Time for Engine oil, should I do all 3 holes?
Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
For me, it depends on how many miles I put on. If I dont have half of the miles (1500) Ill just put it up for storage.
disclaimer: I dont beat on my rides so to me the oil still has lots of life.
been approaching it like this way before the better synthetics came around with no issues ever

cobra23, It wasn't about the money; it was about the mileage on the oils before winter storage. Secondly, you are wrong, for engine an oil & filter change only here in Canada to have HD do the service is $120.26 AND to do all 3 holes is $390.16 both tax in. Yes, it would be cheaper to do it myself, but I don't have the time and it's worth it to me since it's still under warranty. When I retire and have lots of spare time then I'll do it myself. Lastly, I don't use synthetic on the advice of HD here in Canada, I'm sure that will open another can of worms here.

Seriously! All three is an hour out of your life and youll know its down right. Proper amount of fluid, oil filter not cranked on by a monkey, drain plugs torqued to spec and the pride of doing it yourself and saving boat loads priceless!
My thought would be to perhaps just do the engine oil as the engine oil is exposed to so much more moister, blowby, exhaust gases / fuel when the trans is somewhat sealed and the primary is sealed and IMO never contaminated except some metal shavings.

The time it takes to ride the bike there, get some one to pick you up, and drive you home, then bring you back, and then you ride home, takes less time?

It takes how much longer to do the other two? Tranny is the easiest, just a plug and fill hole. Primary isn't that much harder.
A lot of darts coming at me for such a simple question LOL. I live 1.5 miles from the dealer so yes, not far. I paid 40k tax in for the bike new off the showroom floor and it's under warranty to 2027, so it's worth it to me to have them wrench it so they can't blame me for something should that happen. I've invested much more since. Have a nice day.
Oil change once a year in the spring before you go riding so you start your season on fresh oil. You can then do the mental masturbation of a 3-hole or just an oil change.
But, there is no technical reason to change oil before storage, as long as you have changed it at regular intervals. It will all drain the pan, and sit there. If you’ve changed it regularly it won’t have enough contaminates to do harm in any areas where it sits.
One of the big advantages of owning an older motorcycle is not being tethered to the dealership for service. Being able to service your motorcycle is not only rewarding, you know the job was done right and you have the satisfaction of saving lots of money, too.
Question: My 2022 Street Glide Special is going into HD next week for Engine oil/filter change (I do 4,000 kilometers on engine and at 8,000 kilometers all 3 holes) it only has 3,600 kilometers since last 3 hole change so I only need the engine oil changed and a new oil filter. Would you still do all 3 since it will sit on a hoist all winter? or leave the other two alone since it has such low miles on them? My garage is heated as our Canadian winters are brutally cold.
Appreciate the input.
My thoughts are to do all 3, I'm curious as to what you'd do.
