Default Engine Break in

I am picking up my 09 Ultra Saturday and was wondering what the best way to break in the engine is. First new bike I have purchased so this is new to me.

I was told not to lug it...too low of rpm's and to stay out of 6th gear for at least 250 miles I believe. My memory isn't so good Is this necessary??? I did it anyway.

Keep the shiny side up. Ride maybe 250 miles sanely then ride it like you stole it. It will be broken in just fine.

Many ideas, one I saw I liked best was find a long strech of road with little/low traffic. get into 3rd gear at 30mph, go WOT to 70mph in 3rd gear and let off, let bike slow on its own to 30mph and repeat this cycle 10 times.

Ring seating complete, ride normally. Keep long hauls at steady speed to a min for the first 1000 miles. change oil/filter at 1000 then ride however your style dictates.

Cant knock it as i just had a 103 upgrade done, this is what i have done and have had ZERO issues.

For me it,s ride for an hour nice and easy, stop and let the motor cool off fully. Repeat 2 more times. This allows the rings to seat properly, contraction and expansion. Change the oil and filter at 500 miles then do the 1000 mile service at the dealer.
Don,t lug the motor and don,t over rev it.Let the engine warm up before you ride off.As the motor gets more miles and your able to ride it harder run the tranny through the gears, in other words go from first to six then back. Find an open stretch of road for that.Do this for ten minutes and you,ll be ready to fly.
This is the procedure I use on all my dirt bikes. There high revving machines reaching 14000 rpm,s. If this works on my MX bikes it will work on a low revving Harley.

I have used this procedure since 1969; cars and motorcycles. It works

According to the manual:
for the first 80km keep it under 80km/hr (50mi under 50mph)
The next 800km(500mi) avoid wide open throttle or lugging. Vary speed.

After that, like BigG said, ride it like you stole it.

Keep it simple No sudden Starts or Stops if possible.. Get it on the road run it good but don't exceed 4000 RPM vary your speeds frequently and give it a rest period every hour can have it broke in properely in one day follow this method for 500 Miles
