Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I changed the oil in my 08 ultra, engine ,trans, primary. When i went to empty the pan, i saw gold dust in the bottom. I know it is brass from a bushing ,thrust washer etc. Has anyone else had this? The bike runs great has 15,000 on it, but i am concerened something is definitly wearing out. I will change again and use a seperate pan for each oil so i can get an idea where the problem is. Could this be clutch wear? This is my first harley and will have it for many years. I change engine oil at 3,000 and trans , primary at 5,000 The bike has extended warranty for 7 years but still very conserned.
By the way the bike was a christmas gift from my wife and daughter
Have you checked your oil filter as well?
There are several topics on how to open the filter without cutting your fingers off as well
I do not know how much of this flaking you are talking about as words can not really describe what was actually in the oil pan, but you are doing the first step by monitoring it and the next step would be when you do the follow up oil changes and see if it has increased or has it stopped.
7 yrs of extended warranty/insurance is a good bet imo only.

Transmissions and primaries generally don't have any bronze bushings, but you will find a few that have bronze shift forks. I doubt yours does. Sounds like it's coming from the engine, which has several bearing surfaces using bushings. Like posted above....cut the filter open to see what's in there. !5,000 is way past simply being material wearing off due to berak-in. Sounds more like a bronze bearing is going south if you can see that much settling out in your catch pan. Be attentive to "new" noises.
The best thing you have going for you is the warranty!
That is a true bummer, for pete's sake, I wouldn't think you'd have these probs unless your bike was built on a Monday. Along with all the other parts, maybe just dumb luck.
Hate to say it. There is a bronze or brass bushng that the cams ride in the cam plate, also where the connecting rods/arms connect to the crank pin. Best wishes on that one.
