Default Revtech 110 questions

How is everyone doing? I'm brand new to this forum! So here's what I got going on. I'm going to start a winter fxr project very soon. I was given a revtech engine for free and all I can read is horror stories about how bad they are blah blah blah. I'm a advanced (race) engine builder from the sport bike metric world completely new to this Harley stuff. I believe the engine is a gen 1 or 2 which all I can read is they are garbage but I am planning on completely rebuilding it. The previous owner said its a 110ci. Now what are the real issues with them? All I see is people talking smack with no concrete reasons.do the gen 3 parts fit into the earlier models if that's the case that is what I want to do. Any helpful knowledge will be great! My plans as of now are to bore it out a little so i know the bores are nice and round, port the heads, nice valve job, bigger cam,10.5:1 for compression pistons, total seal rings, replace all the bearings, and replace all the cylinder head parts. Thank you -Tyler Sweeney

It was free? Nice. who cares what it may or may not do. If your going to tear into it then don't worry about it. Search the down side to the motor, address those issues, put it back together and ride it. Besides it was free. best of luck.

Ive seen valve guides drop on them . FYI all the parts in that motor are made in Korea by Custom Chrome. Generation can be determined by the rocker box design.

Do you have experience building them?

I dont know enough about Rev to talk em down. A friend had a rev and I never heard anything bad from him. I would send the heads out to be built to perfection. A 110 engine builds alot of heat so I would keep compression to 9.5 or 10/1 tops. If the engine was free go ahead and spend the money to make it solid. Dont over build it cause it will shake like a ***** in heat.

Well, they do have a total chit reputation....BUT it's fairly well documented now, so I recon with a bit of research on their known bugs you could easily fix the trouble spots while you have it apart. I think with a little bit of effort up front and you could have a good strong runner there!

my wife bought me a kit bike from custom chrome in 06'.It has a 110 rev tech in it.I've got about 15k miles on it with no problems, except I had to put compression releases in, cause' after it broke in, the poor starter couldn't turn it past the first revolution! Hope this helps ouyt!

It sounds like you are building it up a bit so, to be on the safe side, I would be splitting the cases or sending the whole lower unit out to Darkhorse for a thorough going over and have the crank trued, balanced and welded. Depending on how you plan to build the motor, I would also talk to Darkhorse about their beefed up rods.

I had a 110 RevTech motor that I inherited when my brother in law died.
I knew the reputation that they had for poor QC, so I disassembled it and inspected and then replaced some stuff and reassembled it.

After that it was a great motor and I never had any trouble with it.
