I need your help....
My 1988 Softail has been puking oil out the breather. I know this is a common problem and covered elsewhere. Mine seems to be more involved...
The bike sat for several years prior to my acquiring it. The previous owner did some handy work which has complicated the process of getting it back on the road.
The bike is dumping an excessive amount of oil from the breather. I mean just pouring it out. I first pulled the pump and discovered that it was entirely missing the key for the gear on the scavenging side of the pump. I installed the key, new gaskets and a new check ball. I confirmed that I had oil coming from the return side of the oil pump.
I fired it up and it is still dumping oil out of the breather. I pulled the cam cover and discovered the breather gear was nearly 180 off from the correct timing. I re-installed and set my end play with a new washer. I fired it up again and discovered that it was still dumping oil just as bad as ever.
I decided that I should pull the cam cover to check my work. The timing was correct however I noted that the crankcase had quite a bit of oil in it. This lead me to believe that the crankcase is filling with oil which is causing it to dump out of the breather. Any suggestions on what the problem is and how to fix it? I am pulling out my hair on this bike. It runs great otherwise.
On a side note, it is not overfull. I am keeping the level low while I work on it so I am not wasting excessive oil....
Thanks guys,
Travis
