Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Your initial question should be: "What are my normal driving conditions?" If you are always on the highway at speed, then an oil cooler is superfluous. If, however, you do lots of stop-n-start, then an oil cooler is critical. I ride I-95 in the Northern Virginia region and have found the cooler to be vital to my engines survival. Lots of clogs on the freeway here and I have noticed a significant difference between pre- and post-installation.
I have a breakout and don't think there are any head cooling fans out for it yet? If I am mistaken, please share where to find one for the breakout.
Jason's last blog explaining the function of his fan system indicated that his fan system was available for all H-D models except the Breakout and the Rocker at that time. I woudl give Jason a call; he might have something available now.
Install an oil cooler and Jason's fans and you will never have to worry about high oil temps.

About Jason's fans:
- Are they plug n'play. or are either wiring or bike mods required?
- Are they waterproof? Not just water resistant, but waterproof?
- How much current does the fan system draw from the bike's electrical system?

Jim,
Jason has quite an extensive write up on the fans, the development and application. Check the link previously posted, read and then give Jason a call. Jason is quite talented and has developed some modifications to the Ricor Intiminator (dampening valve for front forks) which I have installed when I upgraded the suspension in my '02 FLHT which I daresay performs much better than anything the MoCo has produced. You will enjoy talking to Jason.

I went through Jason's site. Nice work, BUT, he specifically says he does not currently have a product that works on the Breakout. I assume this is because the Breakout ignition switch is right where he normally parks the fan, and he probably picks up power from the horn that is normally right there, but not on the Breakout.
Note also that the current draw is 30 watts. I now have a Daymaker headlight, which I assume pulls less current than the normal Halogen headlight, so could accommodate the fans plus my heated vest, IF Jason made a kit for the Breakout. I'll contact him and ask if anything is in the works.
Jason told me via email that he has no plans to produce a "breakout version" of his cooling fan setup, because he just does not have the time, especially for what he perceives as a small number of potential buyers.

Check out Love Jugs. They don't blend in with the bike as well as Jason's fans but they do have frame mount system which might work on the Breakout.
I'm on the fence for the cooling fans for the cylinders/heads. As for oil cooler I was thinking about an Ultracool fan assisted cooler but they aren't out yet for the softails. I have yet to receive an e-mail back on when it will be available. My thinking on the fan assisted oil cooler was that the fans would give some airflow while sitting in traffic. I'm just south of Austin in Kyle, I know Austin traffic all to well.
I'm sorry to say that you own one of the rare models that we cannot install LOVE JUGS on. This is a first for us. I've had our engineering department look at this and they have thrown up their hands.
