Hi fellow riders
I just want info on how a compensator upgrade will benefit my bike. I was offered an upgrade by an indy shop for $300 and he said will be great. I would like to know what to expect.
he said will replace the compensator sprocket and chain
But with what is he using?
SE compensator (improved 2014) or after-market?
I had mine replaced with the earlier SE compensator.
Now they have an even newer model.
The new SE compensator you speak of is a good upgrade. HD has improved the the overall "throw" characteristics of the comp assembly, and it is now OEM equipment on newer bikes. You can expect improved starting, ie... The starter is less likely to "bounce off the ring gear, and shifting should feel smoother with a better neutral "find zone". The plate that is epoxied to the primary cover is designed to properly direct fluid towards the new needle bearings that will be installed behind the comp bolt. I would highly recommend this upgrade.
There is an aftermarket upgrade for the late model compensator, the Compensaver; good reports so far. Hoban Brothers, AKA Darkhorse, also has an upgrade but not sure if it has come to market yet. Not crazy about the glue fix from the MoCo.
There is no "upgrade" for the early compensator. The Bellville springs can weaken but that can be fixed by adding a spring or replacing the Bellville assembly. If maintained, the early compensator/chain will last a long time. Have seen them go 75K miles with no issues, if lubricant is changed and chain adjusted per the service manual.
I have had two installed in the last 14 months and they are still crap. Haven't had the latest and greatest installed and hope I don't have to. Current comp is rattlin a bit on first cold clutch release tho... Keep them rpm's up guys!!!!!!
