Default 1994 Softail Custom Problems

My dad has had this bike since 1996. He had some motor work done in 2004 (SE cam, larger pistons, etc). I wish I could give more detail, but I can't.

Anyway, he blew a headgasket a few months ago. Replaced the head gasket (also replaced the stator and voltage regulator because of charging issues). After doing that, everything ran good, but noticed some top end racket. Replaced the pushrods on the front cylinder. Ran great. Took it out to get some miles on it, and the front cylinder stopped firing...we're thinking bent valve. Took it all apart, and have the head at a shop now. Doesn't appear to be any other damage to the cylinder or anything.

Anyone else have a problem like this before? If it was a valve problem, why did it happen now and not sooner?

Again...I apologize for not having more specific information. I don't have the mechanical knowledge or a complete history of the work that was done on the bike in the past. I'm just going by the info that a mechanic friend of mine passed along to me.
