That might be part of the problem but I don't have the finances to buy the good ones right now

Many problem reported with the "C" lifters. CompCams VThunder 850-1 lifters are a cost effective replacement.

Look into a set of Gatermans they are like $160 vs $260 for 4. You can always verify lifter travel by working of cam base circle start at zero lash and count until lifter spring bottoms. Back off a couple flats and make sure it bleeds to spin. Then just back off half as many flats to come half way. You don't need manufactures specs.
