Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Hello, I picked up a 2006 CVO Ultra late last fall. This is my first Harley and actually the first bike I have owned since I was a kid many years ago. The dealer just did a total top to bottm service on it and replaced the lifter arms with the newer adjustable style. It was definitely a well cared for bike.
I am mechanical to a point but mostly muscle car backgroung. Old Vettes etc. It has a noise that is hard to put my finger on. It does sounds like a lifter rap or exhaust leak type sound. It starts right from the lowest rpm and follows the rpms up until about cruising sppeds then softens. I can not hear it at idle or revving it. I do not believe it is any kind of slack issue as it does it under power not a hit and let off knock.
I did a search on several forums and found some similar issues but most of those discussions were back in 2007 thru 2009 and all ended with no real solution or cause. This bike has 30700 miles on it and runs great other than the annoying noise. It sounded like this was a very common issue.
My question is has there ever been a solution to this? Or is it just what it is and have to live with it? With 30k miles it obviously has not hurt it at least not yet but I am wondering if this is going to be an issue going forward.
They did not say anything about wether or not they changed the lifters. Just that they pulled out the oem push rods and put in the better ones. I will call and find out. Scott
Could be as simple as re-adjusting the pushrods,(we load the lifters to .140" here) or maybe a lifter or 2, acting up.
Did they pour in fresh Syn III oil at the time of installation also?

They are going to look at the tolerances again next time I am in. They did an oil change but not with synthetic. Is there a specific brand or weight you would recommend? Thanks for the help.
