Went for a 400 km scoot yesterday great day but hit a rain/hail storm last 20 km home , as i git home i noticed tach not working then speedo started jumping around and bike died in my driveway
1998 RoadKing EFI , engine code 16 which was battery below 6.2 volts , now thats a dead battery
Was late so i just pulled the battery out this morning and put it on a charger
Any basics to look for ? cables were tight
Yup , Battery's on the charger and have tested the stator for shorts and grounding , so far so good . battery only 6 months old so free Battery or new regulator fingers crossed
Check the connection where the voltage regulator plugs into the stator. If it isn't solid, and I mean a positive 'click' solid, you will eat batteries on a bi-annual basis.

If your talking the connection in the little box on the front down tubes i did pull that apart and it looked really good it was lightly greased and clean as can be
Looks like i've got problems ---Stator readings in AC volts 1000 rpm 7.5 at 3000 rpm 18 so book says 16-20 VAC per 1000 rpm i also get nothing from the voltage regulator no change at the battery at any RPM stator not shorted or grounded ?
Do I need both ?
I unplugged the 2 pin connection from between the stator and the regulator this is where i took the ac readings
Help
18V AC at 3K RPM is too low. As I think I mention in the stickey, I always recommend a new regulator if you are replacing the stator. It is also unusual for a stator to go out with low voltage output and not be shorted to the case. I would take a very close look at the magnets while you are in there, or it could be shorted to itself, also unusual. If your ohm meter is good enough, you might see a very low reading across the pins. Regardless, I'd say it's coming apart.
Just pulled it all down , i lost two magnets off the rotor , stator ohms out ok but is all melted so , i need a new Stator , Rotor and voltage regulator
anyone on the site sell this stuff this is going to hurt
Big Dave I just had a dead battery myself, fortunately my charging system checked out good. I would say $215 for a new charging system is good insurance to a $150 battery every 6 months or so. But then I'm not an expert in these areas.
