Default Upgrade Starter?

Hey guys been a while since I posted on the 87 Lowrider. I have the front torn down and the rear wheel and fender off. I have also stripped most of the wiring out. I am waiting until my extended tank and the 58mm front end get here before I pull the motor as I want to make sure I have enough clearance to avoid hitting the tank with the bars or it sitting to low on the frame.

Now my question is I want to upgrade the starter on this bike. It's a 1987 FXR Lowrider with the evo motor. can I put a late model starter on it and if so which one??

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Sarge,

Do you really need to fit a new starter? I have owned my 1990 bike from new, stroked it to 89" and fitted 10:1 pistons, then replaced it with an S&S 107" and still use the original starter! It works fine.

If you need a good aftermarket starter I run Spyke 1.4 KW starters on my early style starter set ups like yours The motors are 96 ci S&S

You can buy a stronger aftermarket starter motor, but you would have to change the inner and outer primary housings to convert to a "later" model starter assembly ('90 or later)

And be careful with replacement motors - there were 2 different ones used. Prestolite on the Shovels and Early Evos. In 87 they went to Hitachi which is a slightly shorter housing.
