Default 1999 Heritage Taillights

Hi All

I am after some advice, after ordering a replacement tail light for my Heritage the new one that arrived was not the same as the original, if you look the photos the darker light is the original the one that is chrome inside is dealer supplied part.

My local dealer double checked part number and it is the correct one for my bike. Interestingly though is all the other bikes in the dealers that had this style of light on the rear were also dark inside including the new models. Hoping some one has some insight into this and where I could get the correct rear light assembly for my bike or correct part number

Thanks in advance
Mick

What we can see in the new one is that new moulds were introduced in 2010 and that particular light was manufactured in April (4th month) of 2013, from which we can conclude that the moulds are replaced at regular intervals, for whatever reason. That may be because they actually wear, or a modification of some sort has been incorporated. There are year markers in the black one, but they don't show up, so we can't read them.

The simplest thing to do is to puff a matt black rattle can in there! The MoCo is entitled to change stuff over the years, it's a miracle they are still making a replacement after so long.

I think the chrome one would be better.
Chrome reflects light and black absorbs it so the new one should be brighter.

First of all, those aren't taillights, they're turn signal lights. Second, I've NEVER before seen a turn signal housing painted black inside from H-D. My suspicion is that was something that was done by a previous owner. Why? I have no idea.

Yes misunderstanding they are indicators or turn signals I accept that, but as I said in the original post the indicators on the new and second hand bike in the local dealers were also black on the inside, but only the rear ones

Well, I just went out to the garage and dug up the original rear turn signals from my '94 Heritage Softail. I've owned the bike since new, so if they're black on the inside, H-D would have done it, since it's not something I would ever do. Guess what, they're chrome inside. Kinda dirty, but chrome.

Every turn signal I've taken apart(and there have been many) were all chrome. It looks like a previous owner painted yours
