Thanks for the replies guys. I took it all in and will look at both. I was mainly wondering about the EVO engine as I know nothing about them. My only experience with HD bikes is the Sportster and TC engines having had two of each. I've heard that EVO are "bullet proof" and known for their longevity. Is that true? Oil leaks a problem? I'm not talking about the stator connector. That leaks on all of them eventually.

Base gaskets are prone to leak. Well weep actually.
On either one if you decide to change the cam just do a top end rebuild (it is only 8 more bolts) and put in Cometic gaskets and you will be fine.
I haven't been to see either of these and thought I'd get some background before I start wasting the sellers time.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Listen, NEVER feel like you are wasting the sellers time! Dealing with potential buyers is what they must do to make a sale, and believe me, they are getting paid for it. Your job is to learn enough about EVOs and FXRs to make a wise and prudent purchase. Go see as many as it takes. Learn, learn, learn! There will always be other bikes to maybe bring home.
Considering all things being equal, I'd go with the '93 all day long.
Asking price is $5500 for the 93 and $5000 for the 86.
I'm going to go look at the 93 tomorrow afternoon. The guy with the 86 hasn't called me back yet.
I'm thinking $5500 is a premium price for the 93 since it has between 30k and 40k miles. He didn't remember exactly and wasn't home to verify. But that's ok I'll look tomorrow. Oh he has the mid controls still hanging around so I could swap if I wanted.

You trying to tell me some of the 93 had EFI? I just assumed that being a 93 it had a carb. ..... Not sure what you mean??? I like the EFI on my 2010 but I don't think I'm interested in anything older than about 2006 with fuel injection. Heard too many horror stories about early HD FI. I'm pretty comfortable with carbs both smooth bore and CV. No problem for me.
As far as differences between the two, the 93 has a 39mm front end and if I'm not mistaken the 86 has a 35mm. The 39mm has less flex.
I have a 93 FXLR and love it.
Eric Buell had a big hand in designing the FXR frame. It is an excellent handling bike. Some (myself included) believe it to be the best handling bike to come from the moco. The dyna replaced it, not because it was better, but because the frame was cheaper to manufacture.
This post is absolutely true. Dynas are good but will never hold a candle to the FXR.

I'm pretty sure hd had fi in the older bikes and they are garbage harder to work on if you want to get more power out of your motor. Other will chime in. Fuel injection isn't a deal breaker but I would look at paying less and reading up on converting FI to carb we have many how to on that project lol
