Myth or Truth ???
Road King dude, really want one of those. I've just been researching before I buy. i ran into this confusing mess on this forum since I started. Yeah I have to wait till after tax time next year to put money down on one.
You guys in the USA are lucky, i have to look aftermarket catalogs, second-hand market, or buy directly to USA through eBay when i need minor parts to replace in my old bike.
Local dealers are useless here, i can only buy consumables like oil or air filters to them

You might shoot him a PM.
Look for a standard, or base model. They will most likely have a carb. I have both, a 97 carb model and a '98 with efi. The efi was great at first, but then it got some bugs in it that I finally figured out that the ecm went bad. I switched it over to carb. my '97 flht has been ultimately reliable, the '98 woth the efi not so much.
Last time i bought the air filter to them but i think it will be the last time, no worth the money.
I don't buy oil to them, better choices available at aftermarket
Well, here's another wrinkle to consider. You're waiting for next year to have enough for a down payment. It's almost impossible to finance an EVO because they are too old. Banks, in most cases, just won't do them. To get financed, you'll need to be in a later model Twinkie.
Or.....
Start saving the amount of your bike payment now. Let's say you can swing 300/month. Put that aside for the next 10 months, add a couple of grand from taxes and pay cash. No bike payments is a very nice thing. Not too many payment books in this section.
Oh, and the guys that don't like carbs are probably all under 30 and have no clue how to start something that doesn't fire up at the turn of a key. You'll learn that..... and how to turn your own wrenches if you hang around here. Good luck.

Calamity Joe,
I own both Evolution (FXSTC and FXR) and Twin Cam (Road King) powered bikes. Only after replacing the 2001 Twin Cam's M&M fuel injection with a carburetor and the cam chain tensioners with gear drives did the bike have the reliability of an Evolution. I therefore advise that when you find a 1998 carbureted Road King - "snag it!"
