When I was looking, the only thing I had to look for was the ones with the full sized bags with the battery under the seat instead of in the bag area. Nothing wrong with them, just wanted the full bags on both sides. Found the 94 and was good to go.
By '92 the MoCo was using the INA bearing, right? Assuming the guy doesn't have any paperwork saying its been changed, is that something that you'd dig into and change just to be careful (particularly with 71k on the clock), or is it something you can leave alone assuming the stock cam is still installed?
With a stock cam, it MIGHT be OK, but I'd change it. And the lifters. And the cam.
The bike, on the other hand, is way rougher than I was expecting. It looks like its spent a fair number of years being stored outside. There is body damage in several spots. One thing after another would need immediate attention. The kicker for me is that the timing cover looks to be held on with drywall screws. In and of itself, that's no biggie, but it speaks to an attitude toward mainetnance that bothers me.
He didn't have any paperwork on the "valve job", and I got the impression that he really doesn't know what was involved. He insists it has the factory cam, and had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the cam bearing.
He let me take it for a spin. It sounded good and runs strong. Transmission shifts fine. Tires look to have some life left. Got it up to speed on the highway and it tracks fine. The tuning is a mess. Lots of decel pops. The S&S won't idle without the enricher engaged. You can smell how rich its running.
Bottom line for me is that its more of a project than I'm looking for right now, at least at his price. He says he has a guy coming in the morning with cash and a trailer. I told him if the guy shows up and gives him his price, he should take it. If that guy falls through and he's interested in a deal more in the $3k to $3.5k range, give me a call.
We'll see what happens. I'm hoping the other guy takes it. I'll keep looking for something in better shape, even if it takes more money to get there.
Thanks for all the comments and advice. Much appreciation.
