The spacer is held in place by the shoulder of the axle not the lower leg.
I'm not a fan of how they do it in the video because if done in that method there is a chance you are pulling in the right leg instead of it being straight down.
For myself I prefer to use a screwdriver on the right side while fully torquing left side nut then I tighten the nuts on the right.
But that's just me.

Both of my bikes have that gap and have for a very long time.
As song as you aren't putting side pressure on your forks you are fine.

I went from lace rims to mag rims, the parts book looks like the same outer spacer for both rims. Am I missing something? Thanks for the help.
