96 flstn
Hey guys,
i just bought a 96 flstn. This is my first big twin. I love the bike but i have a few issues. I thought some one mite help me with. First it seems impossible to shift into neutral when its running. When i shut it off and reach down and pull it goes rite in . My other problem is its noisey . The motor makes all kinds of noise in the top end . Ive been told its normal but thats hard to believe also it has an ev27 cam and roller push rods , will this change the shift points they dont seem to match the manual .
Thank --ljs

1st check to make sure your shift linkage is tight.
2nd If the motor sounds like a pissed off sewing machine then it is running right.
It is a bit nosier than metrics.
3rd if you don't already have it get the Factory Service Manual for your bike.
Oh and

How many miles on the bike?
The clutch could be several different symptoms,
1) clutch out of adjustment, get a manual and adjust properly.
2)if it's original with a lot of mileage it's probably worn and slipping making it hard to locate neutral. (time to replace)
3) could be an upgraded after market clutch ( like the cam) with a stronger diaphragm and some aftermarket clutches just don't get enough disengagement to easily locate neutral, they require more throw from the ramp in the in your trans. but no one tells you that.........
As for the cam or top end noisy, i never heard of roller pushrods.... However there could be to little preload on the lifters which by the way are roller lifters and the only other roller assembly would be roller rockers and they are naturally noisy ( more moving parts) if you have adjustable pushrods you can set the preload up to .150" and that should quiet things down. If not you got other problems. Again mileage related. How many miles?
Oh and don't worry about shift points, just don't lug the motor....

And ya i dont know much about the motors. Ive only been riding about 5 yrs . The only work ive done is changing the throttle cables and front tail light switch on my sportster . So i got alot to learn
That isn't a Flstn
it's a Flstc which is a better bike IMO.
But that's just because I'm biased.
