Default Super low idle. Sounds cool but......

I was watching some YouTube vids while doing a search for "best sounding Harley" and saw several that were running with the idle set very low, maybe 300 rpm. While they sounded pretty cool, I was wondering how they get enough oil pressure to keep from smoking the motor? Idle speed that low cant be a good idea. What am I missing?

I bet they didn't leave the idle that low for long.

Exactly.

My Evo had a pressure gauge and they don't hold much pressure at idle even at 900. I'm guessing the light came on at like 3 psi...

It's not about oil pressure at idle, it's about what you're doing to your crank. Single pin crank needs some speed to keep from beating itself to death.

It is, after all, a Harley-Davidson, not a "Hogly-Ferguson".

That! Too low RPM and the thing changes round parts into square ones.

Seems like I remember reading idle speed is about oil flow, not pressure. Too low not enough oil volume moving to protect the bearings/moving parts.

Nope, an evo doesn't really get adequate oiling until around 1800RPM's. It's all about not beating that crank to death. Remember, a single pin crank is always going to be heavier on one side. Even though they're balanced they still need speed to spin smoothly.

OK, maybe that was from my shovelhead days.....didn't ride it very long, too rough on me! My first ride on a EVO after that shovel was like DANG that's smooth.

The oiling on an evo and shovel are practically the same save for how oil reaches the rockers and the rest of the top end. This can be rectified with something like the H2LT kit though.
