My gas gauge on my 85 FLTC isn't working and I suspect it is the fuel sending unit in the tank. Where can I buy a new sending unit? I checked the stealership and they want over 350.00 for one which is crazy.
Before you remove the sender, remove the wire from the center of the sender, turn ignition on, the needle should be all the way to one side of the gauge, ground that wire you removed(not to the center stud), and the needle should swing all the way the other direction.
Most fuel gauges read empty when the sender wire is open, and full when grounded, but could be set up to read just the opposite , doesn't matter, as long as you get full range open and grounded.
If it passes this test, the gauge and wiring are likely ok and move on to the sender.
