If you haven't done it yet, replace the shift linkage ends with heim joints. Tightens things up a little more after you replace the bushings and shifter shaft.
I think WP had a link in one of his threads to some nice ones. I bought a set and they appear better than the ones from ACE hardware.

If you go to Autozone they have a blind hole puller and a Bushing driver tool that they rent out... No cost to you if you return them with the receipt.
I had to hack saw the outer bushing with a cut to get it to move, but it is a real fast job. Blind hole puller for the outer bushing, and just use the bushing driver to push the inner one through. Grease up the new bushings and drive the inner until it is flush... Drive the outer one till it is flush, and you are done.
If you are careful with your hammer, you don't even have to take off the floor boards.

One thing I may have done differently was I used a hacksaw blade to cut through the outside bushing. This let it come out in two pieces, to the outside. (the bushing in there already had a split in them) I had access to a bushing driver set and used it to drive the inner bushing toward the engine, there is just enough room to get it all the way out.
Drive the new inner bushing in from the outside till just flush with the inner side opening. Then drive the outer bushing in till flush with the outer side of the primary. The rest is easy enough.
Had seen it mentioned on here that a 11/16 deep socket did a good job for a driver. Not sure on that though
Got my new bushings and shifter shaft today and the new bushings are steel on the outside but plastic on the inside. Not sure I want to use them. I might look for some old stock bushings. These look pretty cheesy...
Put 'em in and grease them and forget about them for a long time.
If ya want to get fancy, drive the inside bushing in about a 1/16" shy of flush, and add an o-ring there.
