You can do the 3.5 rear. That's what I have on mine. It's a custom rim. I also know on 98's you can do a 140 rear without changing anything and it should leave about an 1/8"from the stock 1 1/2" belt but if you widen the rim a 1/2" it will also widen the tire a little so the next thing you'll need to do is a sprocket spacer of 1/4" to be able to use the 140 tire. There is still enough movement on your drive pulley to be able to move the rear pulley to the left a little and still track on the drive pulley properly.

Recommended wheel size for a 120/70/21 is 3.00-3.75...130 and 140 are available.

I totally disagree with that chart for a Fatboy. Stock is correct. However there is no way you can get a 21" rim on the front with a stock fender. I am running a 19x3 w/120/70/19 Metzeler and only have a 1/2" clearance to the fender. Also a 3" rim is doable for 120 series tire but if you go beyond that you would be pushing it.

The chart posted in the below link is for model year Fatboys 2000 - 2015. Since you don't have a signature on your profile, I'm assuming you have a model year 1998 Fatboy from your profile name.
Didn't Harley in model year 2000 on the Softails go to the Twin Cam 88B counter balanced engine with a different frame, along with a new rear suspension, one piece fuel tank, and better brakes? If so, isn't it than possible the chart is correct for a Fatboy?

Keep in mind that mounting the same size tire on a wider than stock rim will bring the sidewalls further out. You say you have no clearance now, going to a wider than stock rim isn't going to improve the situation.

Baja272 hasn't been on here in over 6 years.. Hears a company that I used... 3.5" will work fine.. 5.5" will not without swing arm modifications.
