Default FXR experts please

Hello everyone, I occasionally drop in this section, most often elsewhere, but I believe this is the best spot for the help I need.

I've had the itch for a second bike, and while I did pick up an older Honda 750 Four, I don't really get after it much because what I really want is an FXR.
Sure the FXR-3 and FXR-4 models are the ones's to get, but what about other years?

Can anyone help me identify which years have the most desirable features for the $$$$.
Which years to avoid?

All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

With FXR's, condition is everything. Lots of them have been hacked up, chopped up, screwed up. For my money, in order of importance, look for originality, mileage, year.

I've been pretty well steeped in the FXR world for a couple of years now. Lots of young riders want them, but when you see the ghastly things they do with them, you have to be careful.

My $0.02...

Omaha is right. If you look for one, look for one as original as possible. If you customize it you MUST keep the original take off parts, especially the mids. Elvis makes a living off of this.
Look for a shovelhead fxr as well. Their value is not super high s you might think.

90 and up had the CV carb and the splined transmission shaft, I think and better starter. Not sure when the front ends went from 35mm to 39mm, but it was right around then. 94 had a higher (lower numeric) final drive ratio so highway cruising is better. Of course, standing starts suffer a bit. FXRS-SP and FXRP have 2" longer front forks and a more upright rear shock mounting, which will give you more ground clearance than you should probably try to use. All of these things can be considered desirable.

As others have said, original is better. OTOH, if you're going to murder it out, paint it flat black and add an SOA quarter fairing, you might as well buy one that somebody has already jacked with. Or just buy a Dyna. Nobody cries when you ruin one of those.

There was one for sale around here last year where some guy had cut away the frame tubes that run from the back of the tank down to the rear pegs. Did a really nice job of it too: perfectly clean cuts and fills and then powdercoated the frame. Beautiful work.

But I mean, really. What the ****ing **** would make someone think that was a good idea.

My opinion is as long as you don't cut/hack/chop/rake the frame, you can be forgiven.
