Default Finally Started Reassembly

Took a while but I finally got my heads back and also had the piston fitted properly to the combustion chambers. One of Scott's techs noticed a funny lip on the rings and showed me when i was up there last weekend. After inspecting the rings we determined that a new set of rings was in order. With less than a thousand miles on them, neither of us could figure the cause of the abnormal wear. If anyone has seen this type of wear before, please chime in. The ring thickness is supposed to be .0625" new. (Both 1st and 2nd ring). The top ring is .0550" and 2nd ring is .0580" you can just barely see the lip in the pic.

Note: piston fit is perfect with .0025" clearance. There is no taper or abnormal wear to the cylinder. The piston ring land is right on at .0645" all 4 Rings have the same wear and on both pistons top Ring has the lip on the top side of the Ring and both second rings have the lip on the bottom side if the rings.

I called Wiseco to get the proper sizes to everything as well as a lengthy discussion about the possible cause. All they could determine was that the motor must have been running too hot. My plugs never showed a lean condition to create excessive heat and my ignition timing was right on. Also there was never any signs of pre ignition or detonation.

Any suggestion would be appreciated....

So now on to the good ****. Tonight I installed a new alternator ( cycle electric) did you know that their alternators have 2 sets of windings.

Honed the cylinders for the New rings that should be here in a couple days. Will Need to set ring set end gap. .018" should do it.

Also mounted most of the primary and bolted up the starter.

Took a good look at the bottom of the crank case and there is probably about 4 ounces of oil down there so i grabbed a vacuum pump and sucked it out. Believe it or not it's pretty clean down there. I was expecting it to be worse than it was with 63k on it.

Felt real good to be working on it but it was pretty cold tonight, 35* and no heat in the garage. It's my father in-laws. He let's me keep my bike there for free so i can't complain about the cold. No biggie... So slowly it's coming together and shouldn't be long now.

Looking good. I see the case on your bike cracked just like mine, right where the inner primary bolts up. Is that why you went with the open belt primary? I ended up using a case-saver gasket from James. It was under $30 and worked great.

Yea, was definitely one of the reasons. The other was, do I replace the chain primary (totally worn) or upgrade?

I tend to agree with their heat theory. But it prob wasnt a tuning issue as you explain. I would think that maybe it got pretty warm in traffic or something and that did it. With only 1000 miles total on the rings the motor was still tight and it wouldn't take long in my opinion for it to heat up. And .007" might not take long to wear off under the pressure of new rings(?). Just saying.

Default On The Road Again......

Resumed assembling the motor Saturday morning and worked most of the day. Did some stupid things like Put the front jug and piston on as an assembly (it's the way I prefer) but forgot the base gasket. so apart again.....
Then later in the build once I had the head, rocker assembly and pushrods in and adjusted, I was spinning the motor over by hand (socket on the crank) and before I could get a full revolution it became hard to spin and then heard a snap... Oh ****..... so I backed it up a little and gently tried forward again. No way, thought I snapped a valve or something. It happened so fast that I really couldn't locate where the sound came from. So back apart the top end came. I only removed rockers and pushrods.... Spinning by hand again still had difficulty forward then it hit. HEY STUPID..... DID YOU REMOVE THE ROTOR LOCK ON THE REAR WHEEL??????
Ok so, well, I'm not that old yet but whatever. Getting real good at adjusting the preload though....LOL...
One thing I did do was though to ease the adjusting procedure was to mark the crank @tdc for the rear cylinder with a punch. Just three small pits. Takes the guessing out. Everything else went pretty good though. The S&S intake that was opened up to 1.800 fit so good. I couldn't believe how perfect the ports matched up.
I made a tool to open up the ports at the head and am very pleased with the fit. If I can find a pic of the tool I'll post it. Don't laugh it works very well.
So I got back to it this morning to finish it out. I decided to seat the rings as per Wiseco's advice based on the way my old ring wore out and used S&S's procedure. I'll try to post the vid links.
Primed the motor when I had the fuel tanks off. thought it would be the best time to do it.
First start was for about 1 minute. It was hard to keep the idle steady. 1 1/2 turns on the mixture just wasn't enough. If you look closely you can see a flame pop up out of the carb. Had to blow it out. no harm done...
So for the second start for 4 minutes at a steady Idle I turned the mixture screw out another full turn. Much better...
I got the Wego III installed and my mixture is a little rich but I think I'll leave it that way for a while..(better than lean)
So after I got it adjusted pretty good , idle and accelerator pump, D2ki on curve 3 I took it out for about 15 miles. Ran very well. I don't remember it running this good (very smooth and a lot less vibration) I know they all Vibrate.... Didn't really test anything just rode casually. The one thing I did notice though was without the VOES I no longer get a chug chug starting of from a dead start.. Extremely smooth. If any one wants to know the VOES is in the garbage......I really don't care for them and I believe they create more problems then help....
So all in all it was a great day and I'm

On the Road Again.......

I know it's a long one and no, no Dyno for at least 500 miles. Gonna baby her...

Thanx for the support. Yea a little cold. I had a 1500w electric under the work bench. Saturday was the worst. 38* and 12 hours our there.

Most importantly the maiden 15 mile slow Cruz rectified all of that and the some.....
